Highlights from the Past Year
Wow, what a fantastic year to serve as the NCS president! I’m so honored
to have had this opportunity to lead this hardworking, dedicated and
innovative society, and I thank you for all your support along the way.
Serving as president of NCS is no small task; it truly takes a village to
accomplish the goals of our society. This year, we have so much to be proud
of, and I want to thank everyone who has given their time and talent to
achieve these remarkable milestones for NCS.
Here are just a few highlights of 2017-18:
• Record number of attendees and posters at the NCS 15th Annual Meeting in Waikoloa, Hawaii
• Three regional board of directors appointed: South America, Asia and Middle East/Africa
• First and second NCS South American Regional Chapter Meetings in Quito, Ecuador, and
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (and planning of the next chapter meetings in Seoul, South Korea, in
December 2018 and Dubai, UAE, in April 2019)
• Second collaborative meeting with ANIM/DGNI in Wurzburg, Germany
• Neurocritical Care Research Central (NCRC) created for all research-related projects
• New editor-in-chief of Neurocritical Care, Michael Diringer, MD, takes the reigns
• First INCLINE Research grant awarded
• ENLS courses conducted for the first time in the following 10 countries: Australia, Croatia,
Egypt, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Germany, Greece, Peru, Singapore and Sudan
• Almost 5,000 ENLS certifications over the past year, a 49 percent increase from the previous year
• Expansion of NCS educational products, including textbooks, webinars, podcasts,
pharmacy section PONS series and nursing section N-CASE webinars
• Neurocritical Care On Call was launched
• A website refresh was launched in alignment with the new NCS brand; the Currents
Content Hub was introduced to provide member easy access to tools and resources
• The new NCS Online Community allows members to communicate and share resources
within their own subspecialty as well as across the society policy and procedures to improve
continuity of leadership transitions for all committees
• NCS Bylaws updated and approved
• ABMS Neurocritical Care Subspecialty approval, leading to creation of ACGME-accredited
fellowships in the near future
• Advocacy with government agencies—CMS Grand Rounds and collaborative meetings with
key CMS leaders
• Development of Neurocritical Care Performance Measures and ICU Standards
